At the beginning of the eighteenth century, the SERRA DA MOEDA was a hideout for the first factory of illegal currency of the country. Today, it serves as a refuge for those seeking peace and refreshment in the waterfalls. According to Rubinho, owner of a near bar, ecological guide and researcher of environmental stories of the region: the boyscouts who belong to the Flag of Fernão Dias Paes Leme and directed by Gonçalves Alves e Paiva Lopes were the first white men to come to the Serra da Moeda. Utensils found in the region show that was inhabited by indigenous groups. The first farm that appeared in the region was the Boa Memoria. Founded in 1703 by a Portuguese company that built a factory for the illegal melting of the gold (to make the real currency for the country). The chosen location was strategic to escape from "Quito do Ouro" it means the tax collected at the time. Because of the arrival of the governor Visconde de Barbacena the panic was intensified in the former Vila Rica city and its surroundings. The owner of the farm was sentenced to hanging and the members of society fled. Before fleeing, they sent the slaves to berry the gold and then the slaves where murdered so that no one discovered where the slaves had been hid the wealth. The Boa Memória Farm was donated to a Portuguese family. This family found in the farm a pot of gold, that coins and the owner invited his brothers to live in the village, thus the name of the Moeda City. Moeda means coins in english. Due to the large number of springs and hiking trails, the region is a good choice for sports off-road (hiking trail, biking, hang-gliding and others).
